Serves 4-6
INGREDIENTS
- 3 lbs ground chuck
- 6 Spanish onions, sliced thinly
- 2 teaspoons Fairway Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1 cup plain bread crumbs
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cups of beef broth
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 cup ketchup
DIRECTIONS
- Sauté the sliced onions in the olive oil for 30-40 minutes over a medium heat until caramelized.
- While the onions sautéing, place the ground chuck in a mixing bowl.
- Add the bread crumbs, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and mustard powder to the chuck and mix for two minutes.
- Shape the mixture into 8 flat oval patties.
- Heat a heavy pan on medium heat, and place the patties in the pan. You don’t need any oil in the pan because there is enough fat in the meat.
- Brown well on both sides.
- While the patties are browning, place the beef broth, flour and ketchup into a mixing bowl and blend together.
- Remove the patties from the pan
- Add the beef broth mixture to the onions and bring to a boil for three minutes.
- Put the patties back into the pan with the onions and sauce and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
- Serve the Salisbury Steak with the onions and sauce.
Chef’s Note: Mashed potatoes are the best side dish for Salisbury Steak.
